Intermediate Boys’ Volleyball

The Intermediate Boys’ Volleyball Team had a very successful season placing first in the Round Robin component of the Kettle Lakes Tournament, winning the Moraine Hills Tournament and then coming in first in their pool in the Area Tournament. The boys played 12 games in the Area Tournament and placed 4^th overall out of 13 schools. Mr. Al Jbouri and Mrs. Godwin are so proud of the effort, hard work and skill that this team of players demonstrated throughout the season. We want to thank the following boys for representing Trillium Woods with such great character at every game and tournament:  Alex K., Alex M., Chris H., Christopher T., Connor M., Daniel L., Danny Z., David P., Frank Z., Jacob P., Kaiden L., Max Y., Sibi K., Misha C., and Roy T. The team would also like to thank all of the parents who drove students to practices, games and tournaments. We couldn’t have done it without your support!

Intermediate Girls’ Volleyball

The Intermediate Girls’ Volleyball Team had a fantastic 2015 season! The girls participated in two recreational tournaments before the final area tournament at Crosby Heights Public School on Tuesday, December 2.  After some really incredible volleyball, the girls made it through to the semi-finals, placing fourth overall out of 13 schools. All of the girls developed over the course of the season, demonstrating incredibly perseverance and dedication. Ms. Shields, Mrs. Cosens, and Mrs. Gauthier would like to thank the entire team for all of their hard work and sportsmanship this year.  It was a pleasure working with all of you and watching you develop as players. A huge congratulations to our MVP this year, Rashmi!

York Regional Police Advisory and Safety Tips

This linked community alert was sent to us by York Regional Police with a request to distribute the information to our school communities. In accordance with the Police-Board Protocol, we are sending you the press release along with the following tips to remind your children about personal safety.

Here's what children need to know:

• Their name, age, telephone number, address, city and province.  This can be done through rhyme or song.
• How to contact their parents at any time, by memorizing cell or work numbers.
• How and under what circumstances to call 911.
• To never approach or enter a stranger's vehicle.  A responsible adult would never ask a child for directions or any other question for that matter.
• Make sure they know they have a right to say "no" to an adult, especially when the adult is asking them to do something they have been taught is wrong or feels uncomfortable.  Reminding children of this right is important because children are taught from a young age to respect adults.
• To always tell parents where they will be and to never enter someone's home without their parent's permission.
• If home alone, never admit it when answering the phone. Never answer a knock at the door or speak through it.  Adults can be very persuasive.  Teach your child to call you if there is a knock at the door and if they fear for their safety, teach them to call 911.  Make sure they know that police officers are there to help them and would not get mad if it were a false alarm.
• If they think they are being followed or are in danger they should run home or to a public place.  If someone grabs them, they should try to get away, yelling and screaming while doing so.
• It is important to play in safe areas, never take shortcuts and stick with a buddy whenever possible.

It is never too early or too late to teach children the importance of personal safety.  Common sense, communication and consistency are the keys. Remind children to alert a responsible adult if something strange happens that makes them feel uncomfortable. Remember, crime prevention is everyone's responsibility.

Holiday Hero Mitten Tree

As part of our Holiday Hero campaign and in keeping with a Trillium Woods tradition, we have started our Mitten Tree in the front foyer. Students and parents are welcome to bring a new pair of mittens and/or warm hat to hang on the tree in the front foyer. On December 18th, all donated mittens will be given to a local community shelter to distribute to families in the community who are in need of warm winter clothing.

TWPS Choir Performance at Toronto Marlies Game

The Trillium Woods Choir will be performing at the Toronto Marlies Hockey Game at The Air Canada Centre on Saturday, February 20th! Choir members will receive more details during choir rehearsal on this upcoming Tuesday. All Trillium Woods Families are welcome to come to the game and support this amazing opportunity for our choir members! For more information please contact Ms. Gipp at extension 206.

Red Cross Babysitting Course January 15th

What:Red Cross Babysitting Certification Course
Who: Any interested TWPS student over the age of 11
When: January 15th (PA Day)
Time: 9:00-3:30
Cost: $65.00

Grade 8 Ottawa Trip Parent Information Night

The grade 8 graduating class will have the opportunity to participate in an optional overnight trip to Ottawa in early May. Notices have been sent home with some preliminary details and information regarding the upcoming parent information night.

The information night about the overnight trip to Ottawa will be presented by Chapman Cultural Tours on Wednesday, December 9th at  6:30 pm in the library. Any interested grade 8 parents are welcome to attend.

 

French Immersion Information Sessions and Registrations

Information sessions for the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at French Immersion schools on January 14, 2016 at 7 p.m. Our designated FI school is Michaëlle Jean Public School, 320 Shirley Drive, Richmond Hill.  Please visit YRDSB’s website in January 2016 for any additional information (http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/fi/Pages/Program-Locations.aspx).

FI registration will begin January 15, 2016, after 8:30 am. Parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in September 2016, and wishing to enrol in the FI Program, can visit or call the current school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school where your child attends Senior Kindergarten. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address to Michaëlle Jean Public School to register between January 15 and February 12, 2016. This eliminates the need to provide duplicate enrollment information or to pre-register.

YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools. More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.
