Happy Holidays

As we approach the end of the 2015 calendar year, we take time to reflect upon Trillium Woods’ community successes and its dedication to improving student achievement.  The staff have been busy implementing the various curriculum expectations in classrooms, meeting as divisions and grade teams to discuss and plan program activities which will bring out the best in each student and allow them to be successful with their learning.

Communication between home and school is an essential element of student success.  We appreciate your ongoing involvement in your child’s education, the time spent communicating through the agendas, and the conversations you have had with staff.  We look forward to continuing our partnership in the upcoming year.

We would also like to thank parents for their ongoing support at home. Helping with homework assignments and discussing your child's school day provides the opportunity for support and positive reinforcement. Furthermore, it provides parents an opportunity to exercise strategies used at school to reinforce key concepts.

The holidays are a terrific opportunity for our students to enjoy the greatness of our Canadian winter.  Encourage your children to play outside, skate, toboggan or simply play in the snow.  And while indoors, take the time to play board or card games with your children.  Games that involve strategic thinking enhance critical thinking skills and provide invaluable family time where you can share in the gifts that each of your children bring to our community every day. As a school community, we are indeed blessed with committed and caring individuals.

As the holiday season is upon us and 2015 quickly draws to a close, we wish to extend best wishes for the holidays and for a happy 2016. We are confident that the two week break will prove to be a restful and pleasurable time for families to spend together.  Thanks to all of you for all that you do to make Trillium Woods a great place to be. Whether you come to School Council meetings, participate as a parent volunteer, or come to school open houses and special events — your involvement and presence matters and we value the time, treasures and talents you bring. We look forward to greeting your children upon their return from the holiday on Monday, January 4th, 2016.

Are You Moving?

We have started the process of planning for the 2016-2017 school year! If you are moving or will be leaving Trillium Woods next year, please let the office know (This excludes Grade 8’s going to High school!). It is very important for us to have accurate numbers for next year to plan our classes and organization.

A Letter from a Canadian Soldier

On Remembrance Day, each Trillium Woods student wrote a postcard to an active or veteran Canadian soldier. Below is a response to one of those postcards from a member of our armed forces:

Good afternoon

I would like to thank your students for the wonderful letters I received this morning addressed “To Any Canadian Soldier.”

I was very touched that kids are thinking of Canadian soldiers away from home at Christmas, it is very much appreciated and the letters absolutely made my day.

I am Captain Ryan Gillespie, and I am the sole Canadian here at UNFICYP, that is United Nations Forces in Cyprus, so getting letters from Canada is always welcome.

A bit about what I do here, in case anyone at the school is curious.  I work in the headquarters, but spend a lot of time looking at the two opposing armies, that would be the Turkish Forces and the Republic of Cyprus armies, my job is to monitor what they are doing and making sure they do not violate the rules of the cease-fire agreement.  I also spend a lot of time trying to locate minefields to help make Cyprus mine free.  It is not as dangerous as it sounds, and it gives me a sense of pride knowing I am working to help people achieve peace and security.

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukah/Happy Holidays in Ontario with family and friends.

And I wish you all a Happy and Safe New Year.

Cheers from Cyprus.
